Battle of the birds- battle ground the loft.

Hi readers, hope your weeks are going well, this evening there was an interesting and slightly sad event in my garden, some of you who may have read my recent posts may have seen me mention that we have Starlings nesting in our loft, this is great they may be a common bird but at the same time they are lovely to have nesting in our loft. Now (here's where the dilemma comes in) usually the Starlings are usually gone by now and the nesting area is free for other birds, but this year ( I would guess because of the weather) the Starlings have been a little later than usual, what usually happens is that the Starlings leave and our annual nesting Swifts take charge of the nest for a few months. But obviously if the nest is still occupied by Starlings the Swifts cannot take the nest.

This evening it looked as if one of our annual Swifts wasn't aware of the situation and promptly decided to jump into the nest only to be knocked out by one of the nesting Starlings, the Swift was then attacked by the Starling on the floor. And please correct me if I'm wrong but because Swifts wing spans are too long they cannot take off from the floor, but our Swift still did which was interesting to see. I must say I was upset to see that it is unlikely (but still possible) that Swifts will nest this year in our loft, but the Starlings were still right to react as they did, at the end of the day they were simply protecting their nest and their chicks.

Anyway there should be a post either in the week some time or most likely Sunday evening, but always keep an eye out for a Saturday post, you never know what may happen with birding in the Uk at the moment, in fact I noticed a Whites Thrush, and a Collard Flycatcher are in the UK at the moment, they are notified a mega rarities to the UK on RBA so nice to see some variety in the UK.

Thanks for reading enjoy the rest of your weeks- WMBB
